4 Lifestyle Changes That Helped Us Save Money and Reach Our Financial Goals Faster

For a long time, we felt stuck—financially, emotionally, and mentally. We were working hard, but our bank account didn’t reflect it. After taking a hard, honest look at our spending habits and mindset around money, we discovered a few things that were keeping us from reaching our financial goals.

Once we identified our roadblocks, everything shifted.

1. Re-Evaluating Our Living Situation to Save More

Two years ago, we purchased a home because it felt like the “right” next step. After reviewing our financial goals, we realized the house was slowing down our savings. We made a tough decision:

We put the house back on the market and moved in with my in-laws to reduce expenses and save more money.

It wasn’t easy emotionally, but this decision aligned with our bigger goal: financial freedom. Sometimes saving money requires temporary discomfort in exchange for long-term stability.

2. Shifting Our Money Mindset

We realized our biggest barrier wasn’t our income—it was our mindset about money.

Fear of failure, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome were keeping us from taking action. We started reflecting on past money decisions and practicing gratitude and positive affirmation to rewire our beliefs around money.

Mindset is everything. When you believe you are capable of financial success, your actions begin to align with that belief.

3. Saying No to Alcohol & Casual Social Events

We love our friends and family, but casual hangouts usually meant spending on food and drinks. Those “small” expenses added up fast.

We started saying no to social events that weren’t intentional. Cutting back on alcohol and dining out reduced our spending significantly and gave us more time to focus on budgeting and saving.

4. Cutting Out Fast Food and Takeout

Convenience was costing us money.

Meal planning and cooking at home became a simple way to save hundreds of dollars a month. Every home-cooked meal helped us move closer to our goal of building an emergency fund and paying off debt.

These Aren’t Restrictions—They’re Redirections

These four lifestyle changes helped us reduce expenses, save more money, and shift our mindset toward financial success. We feel more in control of our finances and more aligned with our long-term goals.

We are still working on our emergency fund, and once the house sells, we will be able to aggressively pay down debt and continue our financial freedom journey.
